Has anyone tried the swank diet? I'm waiting for the book to get here (I ordered it from ebay) and am trying to try it with what info I got from the web. I'm not expecting it too be the answer to my prayers or anything but I'm hopeful maybe it might curb some symptoms

Hi Paula,

Yes, I did the Swank diet several years ago, possibly a decade ago even.  Both my husband & I did the diet plan and we both lost alot of weight.  Basically, the diet is very low-fat, and no red meat for one year.  I like the idea of not eating red meat.  We've since gone off the diet and slowly added more 'forbidden' food into our diet (cheese & crackers, for example, sometimes a good ol' steak).

To answer your question, my MS symptoms didn't change one bit.  I didn't notice a thing, still have the left-side weakness, dizziness (now stopped due to Amitriptylene, yay!) and terrible cognitive issues (can't remember a thing anymore, but this could also be due to my peri-menopause).  I think the Swank diet is a very good diet plan, though, I still refer to the excellent recipes in the back of the book.  I hope it helps you!

thanks for answering! I'm trying a few holistic methods, acupuncture, vitamins etc. I actually notice a slight change after deleting sugar and red meat from my diet. Of course it is nice weather and this seems to mean my symptoms disappear for a while so who knows. Basically remaining as healthy as possible can't be a bad thing.

Sounds good, river!  Keep up all your hard work on staying as healthy as you can.  We still do have control over our bodies, where MS likes to think we don't.  Boo on that noise!  It's a good idea to cut out sugar and all the 'bad food' out there, i.e. take-away or fast food.

Presently, my DH & I are starting yet another new diet!    I hesitate, because first, I do not like the word diet.  Secondly, they almost always fail for me.  Now we're trying to eliminate carbohydrates from our meals (think: Atkins Diet).  I am amazed at how many carbs I consume every day!  There goes my fav. oatmeal & flax seed, apple or bananas in the mornings!  Heck, I'm eating them anyway.  Same goes for all fast-food.  My doctor said I have a "fatty" liver, read from my last bloodwork.  The MS Clinic asked me to do this bloodwork for my starting the Copaxone.  It's a one-time thing.  Well, it sure kick-started something for me.  I must MUST lose weight - ugh.  I already knew I am overweight, just by the clothes I'm wearing.  It all turned out to be a blessing-in-disguise, a kick in the pants, if you will.

So goes my new way of eating . . .
I wish you all the best in your healthy-eating venture(s).
Take good care,
kimmi

Hi there - I have had MS for (I believe in hindsight) 19 years. I follow a modified Swank in that I keep my diet low in fat but I have found cutting out gluten and dairy to be the most helpful to me. I am living in balance with MS as best I can. This is what I teach my patients as well (I am a naturopathic doctor.) Hope that helps! The best bet diet you might google as well. Many people follow that one.  Robin

A friend mentioned to me once that I could have Celiac disease, which 'causes' MS symptoms.  I googled this and didn't see any correlation.  It makes sense, tho', for some to cut out dairy & gluten from their diet.

How's your diet working for you?  I'm (DH & I) are still watching our carbs and have now settled into a routine.  All the best to you,

I feel great on the diet! This diet is challenging to follow though so keep that in mind... If you are interested you might cut gluten and dairy out for four weeks and see if you have some improvement.
