For as long as I can recall I've been having problems with my hands reading whether it be a novel or newspaper going from page to page and holding the book proved to be quite a challenge.

Recently I purchased the most affordable $129 electronic book reader called Kobo from Chapters, I'm on my second novel by John Grisham. Apparently in the future downloading newspapers will be an option. The device is great and I don't suspect only this one is since all brands appear similar.

If you're having difficulty with dexterity it's certainly worth looking into.

My two cents

Michael

I also use an ebook reader and find that it's wonderful - more lightweight than a book and certainly easier to turn the pages. I get books from the BC library online and also from a couple of websites that offer free books - Gutenberg and Burgomeister are both good sources.

I've only purchased two books so far and both from Chapters. It came with 100 or so novels that were of no particular interest to me, I still have quite a bit of experimenting to do as I'd like to delete the books which came with the reader and see if I can import other types of documents like PDF files etc.

I had given up fighting with books a while back it's so frustrating when you can't even hold the pages open it's difficult for others to understand but this to me is fantastic. Another good thing is that there are so many of them on the market today they are getting less expensive almost by the day.

My reader takes pdf and txt files which is very useful.

I have to say I find my hand and arm weaknesses more hindering than my inability to walk etc. Can't walk - use a wheelchair. Hands and arms not working - what do you do???

My arms are generally weak and my hands are also weak and feel like I've got thick gloves on all the time - and it's getting worse fast. It's annoying when you try to pick something up and it slips through your hands or the weight is suddenly too much.

Any hints would be much appreciated!

Hi,

I can not view text files unless I convert them to PDF which it will read, not that big of an issue for me as long as I can read a novel and have it handy for something to do while waiting at the doctor, clinic or whatever. Watch this I bet you next year they will come out with a color version LOL.

I'm sorry I really do not have any tips for what you are living through yet frankly my situation appears to be a mirror image with the same symptoms limitations etc.

I use one of those grabbers to pick small stuff from the floor and I almost always utilize a wooden tray on my lap to carry things. That's about it, one caution though be careful with your back I've been having problems with my lower back for the past several weeks due to my bending over to pick things off the floor and then using my back muscles to return upright. That's not a good idea pretty dumb actually so I'm living on back pain medication and those hot pads. Hopefully I'll be back to normal shortly.

PS: as I'm certain you can tell I do not type but utilize a voice recognition program and have been doing so since I don't remember when it's been so long. I've been wheelchair-bound for about six years probably closer to seven.

Which voice recognition program do you use? I'm not quite there yet as I have a laptop and my electric recliner has a tray that comes out of it that my laptop sits on, and although my hands are weak, as my wrists are on the laptop my fingers still move enough to type ... sort of!

I've used a wheelchair since Feb 2009, permanently since the summer of that year. My neurologist says the only word to describe my ms is "aggressive" - no point in saying RRMS, PPMS, SPMS and so on as it's all going so fast. It's definitely progressive, however!

My MS started on Labour Day 2008 with transverse myelitis, and since then it's all gone fast, with lots of other bits of me joining in. My right side has been weak, and therefore arm, since 2008, but my "good" left arm became my "bad" arm about a month ago! So I'm preparing for the inevitability of needing more aids for my arms.

Hi,

First I should tell you that even in the best of times my typing consisted of using both index fingers. Give me a screwdriver and I could fix your IBM Selectric but as far as using it forget it.

The program I use is Dragon NaturallySpeaking the preferred version, the basic one is nothing but a toy. The preferred version usually sells for approximately $199 and goes on sale every once in a while for $150. It comes with a headset and is fairly easy to use and set up, what I like most about it is that you can add words from existing documents so my computer understands that when I say relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis or degenerative disease or demyelination. In other words it learns from your documents and cuts down on the time you need to spend teaching it new words. It does make mistakes and interprets words differently so it's always a good idea to double check your documents before posting them.

The version I have is also bilingual which allows me to communicate in French or English and that makes it very easy for me as I am bilingual. I believe it can type in the range of 180 words per minute which is awesome. Should also mention that I use it today out of necessity as it would take me a good half hour to write what I just did in three minutes!
